Outdoor lanterns: Bringing light to the night in camp

Sunset in camp: the fire is dying, the meal is done, the tent is pitched. Time to relax and look back on the day's adventures. The welcoming glow of outdoor lanterns creates the perfect atmosphere for conversation and storytelling. Outdoor lanterns come in a variety of types and sizes -- from ultra-light backpacking models to familiar large Coleman-type lanterns used in a long-term base camp.

Outdoor lanterns can be battery-powered or can run on fuels like propane, butane, white gas or kerosene. There are also rechargeable models and candle lanterns. Some electric models have adjustable light levels and even remote controls. Battery-operated outdoor lanterns remain cool to the touch and don't give off harmful fumes. But batteries can be expensive and you risk sitting in the dark if you run out. Candle lanterns are good choices for backpackers -- some models collapse into compact units that fit neatly into a pack. Candles are economical, burning for up to 10 hours when installed in a lamp.

Propane and butane models use pre-filled cylinders or canisters. The light level is often adjustable on these outdoor lanterns. With light levels as high as 80 watts, such lamps are bright enough to read by. Many propane and butane types use mantles, fabric impregnated with salt that glows brightly when lit. White gas and kerosene lanterns are inexpensive to run, but can give off unpleasant fumes or odors. Liquid fuels perform better at low temperatures than canister-type fuels. Duel-fuel lamps will run on more than one type of fuel -- white gas and unleaded gas, for example -- a handy feature.

Outdoor lanterns push back the darkness with a cozy glow. Carefully chosen and maintained, your lamp should provide years of reliable service.
