The pocket
compass: A handy piece of outdoor gear
Whether you're biking, hiking,
climbing, boating, kayaking, skiing or sailing, it always helps to
know your direction of travel. A pocket compass will make sure you
stay on track. Compact in design and highly functional, a pocket
compass stows neatly out of sight but remains accessible at a
moment's notice. Don't venture out without one.
Not ready for a full-featured
baseplate or sighting compass with all those arrows and scales? A
basic pocket compass is easy to use and should serve you well if
all you need to know is the direction in which you're heading.
Reminiscent of your grandfather's pocket watch, such compasses are
about the same size and have a similar hinged protective cover.
Often waterproof and shockproof, these little devices are
liquid-filled and have rotating bezels just like their larger
cousins. A magnetic needle in the compass always points to the
Earth's magnetic north pole.
Some models are multifunctional,
with built-in thermometer, altimeter or barometer. You might want
to choose a high-tech digital pocket compass. Some models have
clips or holes, should you want to attach them to a key ring or
carabiner. You can even mount a pocket compass on a wristband for
maximum visibility. There are floating versions for boaters and
specially-designed units for kayakers. One manufacturer even
offers a Braille unit.
Whichever type of pocket compass
you select, be sure to learn to use it before venturing out into
the backcountry. Information on using a compass is widely
available on the Internet. Soon you'll be able to take bearings
and navigate accurately to your destination.
