Waterproofing loads with
canvas tarps
Your equipment is vital to your survival, and canvas tarps
provide the best way to protect it against the elements. Whether
you are traveling through extreme conditions or just trying to
make it to base camp, spreading canvas tarps over your precious
cargo will prevent damage from rust or rot.
Although inferior products exist, always try to find
canvas tarps which is made of a treated breathable fabric,
rather than just waterproofed cotton. The advantage of
breathable fabrics over others is that they allow air to move
between the surfaces, whilst preventing moisture from attacking
the contents. This means that there are fewer problems with
mildew and other moisture related damage.
No other type of covering provides the flexibility of
canvas tarps to cover all kinds of transported equipment and
supplies, no matter what vehicle is being used. However, it is
important to choose a tarp with metal d-ring fixings to ensure
that there is limited wear and tear on the fabric. The d-ring is
where the rope will be pulled through to secure the canvas to
the vehicle, so it is vital that the entire area is well
protected and doubled over to prevent the stitching tearing out.
Fire is always a big safety concern when camping or hiking, and
even during transit accidents will happen. Canvas tarps can be
particularly susceptible to fire damage, so it is a good idea to
pick one that has been labeled as flame retardant, as this will
actively help prevent the spread of fire through the cargo.
Top tip – when packing up your vehicles, use canvas tarps to
separate loads of similar importance, that way, should one load
become compromised, through wind, rain or fire, you will always
have a safely protected alternative.
