The Coleman
lantern legacy and heritage
It is fair to say that the modern day lantern was invented by WC
Coleman. The Coleman lantern is a part of American history which
extends back over 100 years. Today, the Coleman lantern remains
one of the most reliable, efficient and safest ways to light a
tent, caravan, or great outdoors.
The innovations that started in 1901, with the first Coleman
lantern, have continued to the present day. Remarkably, the
technology has not stood still, and today’s lanterns can be
started without matches, have easily changed mantles, and even
exist in remote control versions.
The standard propane Coleman lantern is still a big hit with
campers, thanks to its’ compact size and relative power.
Improvements such as electronic ignition mean that they will
light in even the most extreme wind conditions and you will
never be without light to pitch your tent or tell campfire
stories.
One innovation that their original designer would probably not
have envisaged is the battery operated Coleman lantern. From
full sized rechargeable lanterns with night lights, through to
u-tube versions with energy saving bulbs, Coleman seems as
dedicated to helping camper get as much out of batteries as they
already do from propane.
Of course, the good old kerosene Coleman lantern still offers
the most economical way to light whilst on the move, and the old
classic has not been left behind in the innovation stakes. These
days they are safer and easier to use than ever thanks to the
continued investment in the Coleman legacy. For example, rather
than fiddling with matches, there are now special butane
lighters designed by Coleman, especially for use with their
latest lanterns.
