GPS Map and
mapping software
GPS systems do not work by magic, even if it might seem so at
times. In fact, each one contains a special GPS map which allows
it to match the global position of the unit, in real time,
against a map of the vicinity in which it finds itself. As you
might expect, there are a few sources if you need a GPS map, not
all of them free, and not all of them reliable.
The first source is your old map cupboard. With the right
software, you can create a GPS map from a real one. This will
involve scanning the map into your computer, and using an
appropriate software package to convert the picture into a
series of co-ordinates, heights and other information needed to
build a digital version.
If you do not have a scanner, or a suitable map, then you will
have to purchase a GPS map for use with your particular brand of
GPS receiver. Prices will vary according to the base map used,
and the amount of information that the supplier has put on the
digital map.
For example, a GPS map designed for use with urban and highway
navigation systems, including cities, roads, and other features
will be comparatively expensive when put alongside those which
have only the key geographic features – heights, rivers and
lakes.
This may be enough for the hiker or climber, after all they will
not need a GPS map with every possible detail, and so can opt
for the freely available, or cheaper variety. Usually this is
not an option available to owners of vehicle based GPS systems,
such as aviation, maritime or highway vehicles, who will need to
buy the map from their GPS manufacturer.
