Choosing GPS
mapping software
The invention of the portable GPS has revolutionized the way
people look at a simple camping trip in the Australian outback,
or a hike through a rainforest. With GPS mapping software you
can now scan in a map, or find a digital one, and adapt it
before uploading into your GPS. GPS mapping packages come in
different shapes and sizes, however, and there are some points
to bear in mind when making your choice.
The first thing to look for is that your GPS system is actually
supported by the GPS mapping software that is on offer. It might
seem trivial, but most GPS systems have different ways in which
they store and use information, so it is important to find one
which matches your own system.
Another feature to look for is whether your GPS mapping software
allows you to draw your route directly on the digital map stored
inside. This makes it much easier to define and manage
waypoints, which are then placed in the GPS and used to track
your progress in real time.
Most GPS mapping packages let you retrieve digital maps from the
Internet, which is useful, but try to find one which will also
let you scan in your own paper maps. Avid climbers, hikers and
professional explorers will often have sets of paper maps which
are simply not available digitally since they cover less well-traveled
areas of the world.
Finally, for those who are guided by budgetary constraints –
many vendors will maintain a database of freely downloadable
base maps for their own GPS mapping software. For the frugally
minded, these are an excellent starting point, although you will
probably still need that paper map, because base maps do not
generally include details such as roads!
