Solving the
hydration problem for active outdoor pursuits
One of the key issues which confronts those involved in outdoor
activities which take them away from civilization is hydration.
The key to beating the hydration problem is knowing how much
water you need to drink to remain adequately hydrated, since
then you can manage the supplies that you have more effectively.
It is, for example, possible to use a hydration calculator which
takes into account your weight, and amount of time that you plan
to spend exercising. As a general rule, whilst not exercising
you need to consume about half an ounce of water for each pound
of body weight per day to remain properly hydrated.
Of course, it may not be practical to carry around 75 ounces of
water if you are heading out on a day trip, so the guidelines
regarding hydration from the American College of Sports Medicine
are likely to be of use. Their advice includes sticking to a
high carbohydrate, low fat diet, and consuming plenty of water
between exercise sessions – before you head out, during breaks,
and before you retire for the night.
Naturally, you will still need to transport water, and a
Personal Hydration System such as those from CamelBak will
enable you to carry around enough to quench your thirst, and
keep it cool.
Extreme adventurers such as those scaling Everest, the highest
mountain in the world, refuse to skimp on such an important
natural resource, and state very simply that a personal
hydration system is nothing short of required equipment.
