Buying an
appropriate tent heater
Using a tent heater is a double-edged sword : comfort versus
safety. Historically campers have not had a lot of choice when
it came to choosing an appropriate device to use as a tent
heater, there not being any affordable alternatives to an open
flame.
The risks associated with those pieces of equipment not intended
for use as a tent heater, such as gas or solid fuel stoves,
candles in jars or electric heaters are very real. You could
burn down the tent, burn yourself, or be asphyxiated by carbon
monoxide. Now, however, there are safer alternatives for the
budding camper.
One technology that has been use in the military and shipping
industries is the gas catalytic heater. These have no open
flame, do not produce any poisonous gases, and do not need
electricity, which makes them perfect for use as a tent heater.
Of course, there are caveats. As long as the camper follows the
golden rules associated with any heat producing equipment –
leave room for it to breathe, and do not touch – there is no
reason why a gas catalytic tent heater cannot be a safe and
comfortable way to heat a tent.
For the ultimate in safety, it is always advisable to place the
tent heater outside the tent itself, and equipment which allows
you to do this is now becoming more widely available. Make sure
that you purchase one which is protected from the elements by a
plastic case – or be prepared to shield it yourself in some way.
