Backpacking
gear – from the bare essentials to useful gifts
When preparing for a long trek in the great outdoors, it is
always wise to take note of the amount of backpacking gear you
intend to haul around with you. There are various ways in which
you can calculate the amount of backpacking gear you should be
taking, based on your own body weight – an intermediate
backpacker should be able to carry a quarter of their weight,
less water.
While there is a bewildering amount to choose from when
selecting the various items of backpacking gear that you might
need, there are some essential guidelines to bear in mind when
trying to make an informed decision. For example, try to select
multifunction items – there is no sense taking three separate
layers of clothing if you can buy a jacket which will protect
you from the wind, keep you warm, and is also waterproof.
Boots are another element of backpacking gear that gets
neglected; proper footwear will make or break your expedition,
so be sure to pick a known brand which will still fit your feet
if they swell up overnight.
Then, of course, there are those pieces of backpacking gear that
can be considered gadgets in their own right. If you’re shopping
for a committed backpacker, and want to give a cool, but
practical gift, then there is sure to be something in the stores
for him or her.
Classic backpacking gear gifts include presentation folding
knives, map cases, GPS systems (for the well-heeled), not to
mention all manner of flashlights, headlamps, and the
ever-popular Swiss Army Knife.
