Is your navigation system ready?
Whether you are a vehicle driver, hiker, or mariner, you always
need to know where you are located, and using a paper map as a
navigation system has become almost obsolete. These days, the
only navigation system that counts comes in a box of
electronics, and can pinpoint your position to within 10 feet;
automatically.
The first people to use Global Positioning System, or GPS, based
navigation systems were those out at sea. Being more or less
featureless and often hostile environment, they were a real step
up from fighting with compass readings, star sightings, and a
traditional naval chart.
Next, navigation system manufacturers turned their attention to
road users, where GPS was found to be as much an issue of safety
as convenience. Now, drivers can know where they are, and where
they need to go next in order to arrive at their destination,
without trying to read a map and drive at the same time. We’ve
all been there, and it’s plain dangerous.
Safety is also a big issue for hikers and walkers, especially in
areas where there may be fog, or on featureless landscapes such
as snow : a GPS based navigation system does not have to rely on
visual cues to know where it is. Portable units have now come
down enough in price as to be used by everyone involved in
outdoor leisure activities.
Of course, all this would not be possible without a map. Inside
each navigation system is a CD-ROM or memory chip which has to
contain information which is up to date. For portable units,
this information can often be downloaded for free, however those
with fixed vehicular systems, a CD-ROM will need to be purchased
directly from the manufacturer.
