Choosing
camping cookware
Choosing the correct camping cookware is based on the same
principles as most other camping accessories. It is a case of
finding the right equipment to match the conditions and
requirements, and for camping cookware this generally means
trading features such as weight against capacity and features
such as non-stick coating and practical handles.
The simplest form of camping cookware that can be purchased is
the basic mess tin. These tend to have the advantage of being
lightweight and compact, and fit together in pairs, leaving a
hollow center which is ideal for storing smaller bits and pieces
such as condiments inside.
The only problem with mess tins is that they do not function
terribly well as camping cookware if you need to do anything
more substantial than boiling water, because they have a very
low heat retention capacity and food tends to burn in them and
sticks fast.
If you are camping as a leisure activity, the last thing you
want to be doing at the end of a day is trying to clean dirty
mess tins. So, much like at home, it is worth investing in
camping cookware which is coated in a non-stick coating for easy
cleaning.
Finally, although you might think that a kettle is a luxury best
left at home, and not a vital piece of camping cookware, just
remember that it is the perfect way to boil water. This means
that, not only can you brew a perfect cup of tea or coffee, but
that if you need hot water for sterilization, cleaning or
hydrating a special dried meal, you can do so faster and more
efficiently than with other means.
