Choosing from
a range of camping cots
If the thought of sleeping on one of your old camping cots fills
you with dread – they squeak, are rusty, and leave holes in the
floor of your tent – then perhaps it is time for you to change.
In the time since you last bought one you may also find that the
world of camping cots has changed for the better.
When you are shopping for camping cots, be sure to check that
they come with a mattress that is at least 2 inches thick, and
is made of foam rubber. It is also a good idea that it comes
with a cover, since traveling with a cot is bound to make it
dirty. You will also benefit from some kind of clip to hold the
two ends together when it is folded – otherwise they have a
tendency to spring apart at the most inopportune moment.
While typical camping cots have frames which are made of
aluminum coated in enamel (which looks good and is durable) some
manufacturers also turn towards more natural materials such as
wood. They have the advantage of being easy on tent floors –
wood will cause less damage than metal in the long run - and
also tend to roll rather than fold up, thus taking much less
space.
If you find that bending down to one of the traditional camping
cots is too much for you, then there are also models which raise
the bed part higher up by virtue of being on X shaped supports.
Of course these may prove to high for tent use, and also the
feet might have a tendency to cause unnecessary wear on the
floor.
