Safety first
when living with candle lanterns
There is something romantic about using candle lanterns when
sleeping on a camping trip – they give off a nice soft glow, as
compared with a flashlight, they do not smell like a kerosene
lamp can, and are very economical. Candle lanterns are, however,
somewhat less safe to use under canvas than an alternative form
of lighting; especially if you use a makeshift solution such as
a jar with holes punched in the lid.
Rather than trying to make your own, buying from a range of
commercial candle lanterns also makes sense when you consider
that they have safety features and other design points which
make them easier to use. For example, manufacturers have started
to improve the technology by including features which mean that
the candle burns with a constant flame, with resistance against
wind.
Not to mention the fact that manufacturers of candle lanterns
have also entered the candle manufacturing business in an
attempt to produce specially designed candles which give off a
soft romantic glow, whilst also burning for as long as nine
hours.
Once you have decided that candle lanterns are for you, please
be sure to stick to the safety guidelines provided by the
manufacturer, because fire is one of those little hazards on a
camp site that can quickly turn into a major problem.
Generally speaking, this means that you should never sleep while
candle lanterns are burning, and they should be kept well away
from tent walls – about two feet of clear area is considered a
safe minimum.
