From PDAs to
GPS handheld computers
Portable navigation systems have been on the market for a while
now, but where they differ from GPS handheld computers is in the
application of new technological paradigms such as the
ubiquitous Personal Digital Assistant, or PDA. Manufacturers
have woken up to the fact that, while not all prospective GPS
handheld computer purchasers already own a PDA, it is a big
selling point for their units if they can incorporate one.
It can be argued that this move towards GPS handheld computers
is a direct result of manufacturers first attempt to corner the
market. This required that they marry their GPS technology to
existing PDA’s on the market from companies such as Compaq and
Hewlett Packard.
This was perceived as a cunning move because it allowed the
navigation system to take advantage of the processing power of
the PDA to turn the system into a true GPS handheld computer,
rather than a glorified compass. However, as people look to
upgrade their technology, manufacturers keen to take advantage
of this are seeking to push their commercial advantage by
offering all in one solutions.
Whether this new brand of GPS handheld computer can actually
break the mould and replace solutions combining the two will
depend on the operating system that the GPS manufacturers
choose. Those upgrading their systems may require that their new
devices remain compatible with the investment that they have
made in terms of software and data.
What is certain, however, is that for first time purchasers,
this new style of GPS handheld marriage with a PDA is a very
attractive alternative that consumers are sure to be attracted
to.
