Choosing the
GPS information system that matches your needs
One of the first things that you need to be able to evaluate
when looking to buy a navigation system is what kind of GPS
information is appropriate for the circumstances under which you
will be using the system. For example, the kind of features and
GPS information that are of use to hikers and walkers is very
different to that which is needed by mariners.
The first thing which should be considered is whether the GPS
information that is conveyed to the user includes a full color
map. A full color map might be slightly overkill for a hiker,
but will be vital for vehicular applications where the driver
does not want to spend time looking at the machine, whilst
driving, trying to differentiate a freeway from a river.
Next on the list of possible GPS information is the bearing to
the next defined waypoint. This is one of those little bits of
information which is of no use to you at all if you are driving
in a city, but pretty vital out in the open countryside, where
you are not looking at your GPS unit all the time, and would
rather take the occasional bearing from a compass.
People assume that having access to GPS information systems
means that traditional navigation for hikers and walkers is
thrown out as it is with vehicular GPS users and mariners. This,
however, would take a lot of the fun out of the activity, and so
in the final analysis, while replacing a map with a machine is a
good idea, you want to leave some traditional techniques open.
