The trusty hiking staff – a friend in all weathers

No matter your age, if you want to go out in the great outdoors, a hiking staff is one of those accessories which can lend style to your apparel, and be very useful in many different circumstances. If you thought that a hiking staff was just an aid for walking, then imagine the various times when you wish you had been equipped with a piece of wood, unable to find a handy tree to take a branch from.

Naturally, the key use for a hiking staff is when the terrain is slightly more rugged, and you need an additional leg to help you balance. Springing across streams, scrambling over rocks, even stalking through the undergrowth all benefit from being able to lean on a staff from time to time.

While many people still think of the trusty old hiking staff as a wooden affair, perhaps carved with an interesting design, modern versions now come in all kinds of different materials. They are generally much lighter, and often come in clever telescopic varieties, which can fold up into a very small package for easy storage and transportation.

Advances in technology have meant that at the two ends of the typical hiking staff, changes have been made to make them safer and more practical. At the handle end, for example, we can now find accessories such as foldable seats, which are highly practical for the budding hiker. A the business end, things have changed too, with advances in rubber technology meaning that the little foot at the end of the staff is now less prone to sliding in damp weather than ever before.
