Safety first
with outdoor heaters
The technology used to power outdoor heaters has changed over
the years. Where they used to rely on either electricity or
naked flames to provide the heat, these days, outdoor heaters
are much safer and economical to run, thanks to techniques first
used in military applications which has remained out of reach
for the leisure market, until now.
They are known as gas catalytic outdoor heaters, and offer a
remarkable degree of portability and flexibility. While you will
not be able to fit one of these clever devices in your back
pack, they are the perfect solution for heating a semi-fixed or
fixed tent when the cold nights set in. What better way to
extend the camping season for all the family?
The advantage of gas catalytic outdoor heaters over other types
is that they do not give off poisonous fumes. Anything that
burns consumes oxygen and replaces it with carbon monoxide, an
odorless gas which can suffocate when it builds up in an
enclosed space.
Hence, any advances in the technology used in outdoor heaters
which can remove this threat is to be welcomed. Of course, they
still need to consume air to generate power, and so it is worth
trying to keep the machine itself outside the tent, so that you
don’t accidentally touch its hot surfaces, and also so that it
has a ready supply of air.
Finally, no matter which of the outdoor heaters you choose,
remember the golden rules of heat and fire. Keep it away from
tent walls, and small children, and always heat well ventilated
spaces only. And when you go to sleep – turn everything off.
