Traveling with
a propane stove
When you are out in the countryside, trekking, hiking or just
day tripping it is always important to be able to cook up a hot
snack or drink, and the most economic and portable way to do so
is with a propane stove. Even if you do not plan on being away
overnight, a propane stove should still form part of your
supplies, as you never know if you might find yourself stranded
and in need of a life-saving hot drink.
While at first sight a propane stove can seem bulky – after all
you need to carry the stove itself, usually a fairly flimsy
affair, and then at least two propane canisters to provide the
fuel. If you purchase a big brand such as Coleman, you will
benefit from the superior manufacturing and design features; in
fact, Coleman’s stoves have won awards for their stunning
portability and versatility.
Also be aware that while many airline carriers will not refuse
to carry the propane stove itself, they will not generally allow
the passage of pressurized canisters of flammable fuel, it is
always best to try and purchase the fuel when you arrive at your
destination. Of course, buying a well-known brand will again
help in this.
In order to increase the safety features of their stoves, many
manufacturers now insist that you use their branded fuel with
the propane stove you have bought, and in some cases it is not
possible to connect a third party canister to the stove. Rather
than a marketing ploy, in many cases this will help to prevent
leakage, which can be dangerous and wasteful.
