Tent poles
– useful for repairing tents, as well as fishing
There are two very good arguments for taking spare tent poles on
a camping trip with you. The first is that they are good for
replacing the existing tent poles, should they break, get lost,
left behind or otherwise rendered unusable. The second is that,
believe it or not, they can make very good substitutes for other
items such as fishing rods, and bows.
If you want to use your replacement tent poles, or for that
matter the ones from your tent, for anything other than the
function for which they were actually designed, then you will
need to bear a few point in mind. The first being that if you
are going to carry them around with you, they should be made of
a lightweight material.
This material should be strong enough to hold up canvas (they
are tent poles, after all) and yet light enough that you don’t
notice the extra weight in your pack. The usual recommended
material is fiberglass, which has the additional bonus of being
reasonably cheap, and flexible.
The flexibility is important when it comes to using your
replacement tent poles for fishing rods or bows. Tying a piece
of parachute cord across a slightly bowed pole will yield a
system by which it is possible to deliver a makeshift arrow with
surprising force and accuracy.
Never forget, though, that the primary reason for taking a bunch
of spare tent poles with you is so that you can replace those
which are holding up your tent, should the need arise – so once
you have compromised the spares, you will have nothing else to
fall back on. So, even the spares will need spares – dual use
only goes so far…
