Waterproof
pants for all climates
Like choosing any kind of waterproof clothing, it is important
go get the right kind of waterproof pants for the expedition
that you have in mind. The climate can change remarkably over a
trek, and so it is important that the waterproof pants that you
buy are a match for the harshest of the climates that you are
going to encounter.
There are also several kinds of water proof pants, starting with
the kind of clothing which have become known in the hiking
community as gaitors. While they are not really true pants, they
at least have the advantage of being easy to put on and take
off. A gaitor is like a pant leg, and covers the boot, ankle,
and can be even long enough to cover the calf and shin up to the
knee.
However, for full protection in wet weather and snowy
conditions, where it is likely that gaitors will not provide
enough protection, one should take a pair of waterproof pants
along on the trek. The cheaper end of the market includes pants
which are just water tight – they do not breathe, have no
special coverings or interiors and are designed to fit over the
existing pants, but only for use when it actually rains.
While they do have the advantage of being easy to roll up, and
are cheap, once they are wet, they have to be stored somewhere.
So, it is worth considering more expensive waterproof pants
which can be worn all the time, like regular pants, and are
designed to work within your layering system to protect you from
the elements.
