for when buying a canteen
A canteen is an item of camping equipment which no intrepid
explorer will be able to get very far without. A canteen can
save lives, so it is one of the most important pieces of
equipment that can be carried around. It serves as a place to
store water – either for drinking or to wash wounds in the event
of an accident, mop brows if a person becomes ill, or one of any
number of other possible uses.
Thus it pays to make sure that the canteen you choose is
durable, effective, and has some features which will make it
more useful than just as something to carry your water in. One
of the first features that you should look for is a good, solid
carrying strap.
Most of the time, the strap will be used to carry the canteen,
but there might be an occasion when you need to improvise and
use it for something else. In such cases, it will pay to have a
strap which is tough enough to hold a persons weight.
If you want to use your canteen to keep the contents cool, such
as those going on en expedition where the temperatures are
higher than normal, it is important to pick a model which has
its own insulation. Do not rely on the bottle holder on your
backpack or belt to do this.
Finally, choosing a canteen with an easy to use spout will pay
dividends in cases where water needs to be preserved, as it will
prevent unnecessary wastage by providing an easy way to pour
accurately. This may not seem very important when buying the
item, but it might become more so when it is used in the field.
