Planning for
ultralight backpacking
It might seem at first to be a rather irresponsible idea – the
thought of going out into the wild with as little equipment as
possible, which is the driving force behind ultralight
backpacking might make many hiking enthusiasts wonder why they
bothered with being prepared for any eventuality. In fact,
ultralight backpacking can, in certain circumstances, and
following certain guidelines, be a fun alternative to carrying
around a lot of gear which you might not actually use.
The key to getting started in ultralight backpacking is to try
and shed as many pound of weight as possible whilst still
remaining safe and comfortable whilst you do it. This means that
the first chore is to make a list of all the gear that you will
need, and choose products which are as compact and light as
possible.
There are some unlikely contenders in the ultralight backpacking
inventory, which might seem to be luxury items, but which are
actually well chosen to fit in with the philosophy of being
prepared whilst carrying the smallest amount of equipment
possible. One of these items is an umbrella, which might prove
to be the most useful bit of kit you pack, as it protects from
rain and sun, cutting down on other protective clothing.
Then there are the more obvious ultralight backpacking
decisions, such as choosing a pack which is big and sturdy,
whilst also weighing as little as possible. The right choice
will save you precious pounds, but please remember to choose one
which is comfortable and appropriate for the conditions – there
is no sense being miserable through the whole experience. This
also goes for choosing appropriate clothing.
