Not all
waterproof shoes are created equal
All walkers are familiar with the dilemma – finding a pair of
shoes which are comfortable in all weathers, and which can be
work when the weather turns nasty. The problem is that most
waterproof shoes come at a premium and so walkers tend to treat
their shoes with a spray instead. However, this approach is
simply not as good as purchasing a pair of solid waterproof
shoes, which need to have the unique ability to continue to
breathe whilst keeping rain and water out.
The way that most manufacturers deal with this issue is to put a
Gore-tex lining in their waterproof boots which protects against
water as well as allowing the foot inside to breathe. These do
add a large premium to the shoe or boot, but it is well worth it
as it will remain waterproof for several years and stay
comfortable all the while.
Another alternative to real waterproof shoes is the overshoe,
which can protect against moisture and will be cheaper than
buying an entirely watertight piece of footwear. On the other
hand, they will probably not keep your foot entirely dry, and
are mainly for use as splash proofing, unless you buy one that
completely encapsulates the shoe. These come with other
problems, such as slipping inside the overshoe causing a less
comfortable journey.
Finally, you can simply turn your regular walking shoes into
waterproof shoes by sealing the shoe with a spray. However, it
is not as long lasting, and may not provide the same level of
protection as a dedicated waterproofing system found in the more
expensive shoes and boots.
