Make sure your
camping canteens are up to the job
On the face of it, camping canteens are reasonably simple pieces
of equipment – they can store liquids, possibly keep them hot in
the winter and cold in the summer, are usually contained inside
some form of carrying web, and are generally available for a
good price. However, canteens have to be up to the job which you
will be demanding of them, like all camping, trekking, hunting
or extreme winter sports equipment.
While for some applications, such as running around a camp site,
or going on small treks close to civilization, plastic canteens
might be appropriate, for those going further away, it becomes
necessary to choose something which can stand up to more abuse,
and carry more liquid.
It would be a mistake to choose canteens which do not hold
enough water to satisfy your thirst for as long as you expect to
be out, and equally foolish not to try and ensure that there is
more than enough. After all, if you have an accident, or get
lost, then all that separates you from survival could be the
availability of water.
If this seems melodramatic, then it is worth remembering that
desert canteens are constructed with exactly this approach in
mind – to be able to resist high temperatures, whilst keeping
the contents reasonably cool, and large enough that there is
always a little in reserve.
So, taking care when choosing canteens for your trek can mean
the difference between being thirsty and having a fun and
comfortable adventure.
