Buying
directly from the backpack manufacturer
It may not be a surprise to you to learn that not all backpacks
carrying a specific logo are actually designed or manufactured
by the company that owns the brand – indeed many are actually
produced by what is called an OEM (original equipment
manufacturer), a backpack manufacturer which does just that. The
advantage for a backpack manufacturer is that they do not need
to spend time and money promoting their brand, since that is
being done for them by the brand owner.
This can happen when a brand that has become known for other
items of outdoor and leisure equipment such as shoes, boots,
jackets and so forth decides that they want to move out into
other types of equipment. They then look around for the original
backpack manufacturer, and purchase the goods directly from the
factory before re-branding them and selling them as their own.
Somewhere inside the pack, on a label, or in the documentation
will be the name of this manufacturer, and this information will
help you to choose a pack that is appropriate for you.
With the name of the original backpack manufacturer you can do
one of two things. You can look it up on the internet and find
out what kind of tradition the original maker has, in an attempt
to establish the value of the pack that is being sold –
remembering that branded goods often exploit a connection with a
name which does not always lead to high quality goods when they
move away from traditional lines.
You can also use the backpack manufacturer name to find an
outlet that will sell the pack directly to you, before branding
– you get the same great pack, but without the markup that the
premium brand might put on it.
