Two types of
the
camp stove
When you look around for a camp stove to take with you on your
next camping experience, you would be forgiven for thinking that
there is only one choice – liquid gas such as propane, in a
heavy canister, with a flimsy cooking support and clumsy valve.
This is the traditional view that campers have of this most
vital of equipment. Numerous problems have been cited with this
design of camp stove, mainly because of its’ bulk and fiddly
mechanical parts. Not to mention the weight of the canister.
However, over at Coleman, they have actually produced a very
lightweight camp stove, which weighs less than three ounces, and
operates on re-sealable fuel canisters. The usually bulky
cooking support has been reduced to the bare minimum and can be
easily folded away whilst not in use. It is also serrated which
will help keep a grip on the pan sitting on top of the
apparatus.
If this is still too bulky, remembering that the average cooking
time that will be obtained from one of the canisters will be
less than one hour, and you will need to take plenty of spare
canisters along with your camp stove, then perhaps there is an
alternative to consider.
An alcohol based camp stove burns pure alcohol which has the
advantage of being light to carry, and burns in a way which
means that it has to be protected due to the lack of flame
stability. This in turn has led to a design in stoves which
enables higher temperatures to be reached and thus faster
cooking (boiling) times can be achieved.
