Choosing a
Silva compass
When it comes to navigating in the great outdoors with a map,
pencil and ruler, the only additional navigation aid you will
need is a Silva compass. The tradition of these instruments is
long and illustrious, and it is true to say that when most
people think of a compass, it is the familiar red and clear
plastic shape of the Silva compass that comes to mind.
What is surprising is that, over the years, the good old Silva
compass has evolved from a reasonably simple affair into
something which takes the basic design and adds useful twists,
such as a clear base plate, and graduated dial. There are even
models which are specifically designed to fit the smaller grip
of children’s hands so that they get the most comfortable
introduction to orienteering possible.
For those who want to use their Silva compass when driving, or
in other circumstances where they need an accurate measurement
of distance on windy roads or following a river, there is also a
model which contains a built in map measurer – a tiny wheel
which you can use to trace a path on the map.
The Silva compass range also has pocket models, which fold away
into a protective case which is tough enough to put up with
shocks as well as scratches.
For those of you with a portable GPS navigation system which
does not have its own built-in map, the Silva compass range also
as a unique solution. The GPS companion model uses the same UTM
style map grids which enable you to plot your coordinates
accurately on a map.
