Comparison of
down sleeping bags and regular filled sleeping bags
Choosing a sleeping bag is not as simple as it used to be, since
over the years a variety of fillings have been tried and
discarded to leave two choices - down sleeping bags and
synthetic sleeping bags. Both have their good and bad points,
and there are also some guiding principles which need to be
followed when choosing whether or not to buy one of a range of
down sleeping bags or to stick with one with a synthetic filler.
The first thing to note is that neither down sleeping bags or
synthetic filled ones have a standard heat retention rating.
That is to say, although one is man made and the other is
naturally occurring, the control that you might image would
exist in either case is not there. Not all feathers are equal,
and not all synthetic fillers are equal.
If weight is a top priority, then down sleeping bags will win
out over synthetic ones every time. They are far lighter for the
same temperature rating, but suffer in other areas, such as
water protection. Unless the bag is very well protected, it
should only be taken into areas where it will not be subjected
to water, since feathers do not react well to getting wet.
Synthetic sleeping bags are generally much cheaper than down
sleeping bags, and have the additional bonus that your own body
heat can quite easily dry out a good polar quality sleeping bag,
which it will never be able to do with a down equivalent.
