What to look for when buying canopys for outdoor leisure activities

At first, it might seem that purchasing canopys for outdoor leisure use is a simple matter – after all they are just bits of waterproof fabric slung over some poles. However, there are a few things to look for when choosing from a range of canopys which might seem to be luxury features but which can have an effect on the way in which the product is used and the conditions under which it will be effective.

The most contentious issue is that of fireproof canopys. Many people simply do not look for a fabric that is fireproof, and many fabrics which can be turned into items like tents and other coverings come with fire safety warning attached to them. Fireproof fabrics are essential if you are going to cook or park a vehicle beneath the canopy, but if it is just designed for people to sleep or congregate under, then this may not be the case.

Canopys are also reliant on a frame which will support them in all conditions that they might be subjected to. The same rules apply to buying a canopy as other products which are designed to protect – if they are going to be carried then there will be a trade off of stability against weight. Therefore, try to find lightweight poles, and a good anchoring system, if it will need to travel on a backpack, and weighted feet if not, as this reduces the need for stabilizing ropes which might not be appropriate for a semi-permanent emplacement.
