GPS devices
explained
If you are new to the world of GPS devices then there are
probably a few pieces of information that you will need before
you try to choose from all the various available models and
manufacturers. In fact, GPS devices are a reasonably new
phenomena, and have only recently hit a price point which is
within reach of the leisure market. Previously, they were only
found in military applications, and expensive in-car navigation
systems.
GPS devices work by taking signals from up to 12 satellites, and
using the range from them to the unit as triangulation points,
enabling them to be very accurate and pinpoint the units
position, either for display to the user to plot on a map, or
using an internal mapping display.
Those GPS devices with built-in maps are still at the top end of
the market, and also tend to be slightly larger than their
handheld counterparts, except in certain, high price models.
Whether it is worth the extra investment rather depends on what
the end user will be doing with the unit.
There is another technology, known as WAAS, Wide Area
Augmentation System, which uses terrestrial signal sources to
improve the GPS devices accuracy to within 3 feet of reality.
Such is the popularity of this system, that it is being included
on medium to high range leisure units as well as those aimed at
more advanced users.
Finally, if the end user intends to use a portable GPS for
trekking and walking, then choosing one of the GPS devices with
PC connectivity will increase the potential of the unit
immensely.
