Planning outdoor recreation activities can be something of a
daunting experience, depending upon how many people are going to
be involved, what kind of equipment is going to be needed, and
how it is to be carried. When most people think of outdoor
recreation on the small scale, they tend to imagine that as long
as each person knows what it is they need to be wearing or
carrying, they can just bundle everyone into an SUV and trip off
into the distance.
While this might be a satisfactory approach to planning outdoor
recreation for a family – what happens when you need to do
something on a larger scale, involving many people who might not
be experts, and a little over enthusiastic into the bargain.
People who own or run outdoor recreation companies face up to
this kind of dilemma every day, and so good planning is of the
utmost importance. Generally, the whole operation needs to be
broken down into gear, activities and people. The key to good
planning is knowing what will be needed, when, and who is going
to carry it.
Simple things like ensuring that if the group is separated, then
everybody will have access to an emergency tent, should they
need it, are often overlooked and can lead to outdoor recreation
disasters resulting in injury.
So, the mainstay in successful outdoor recreation planning is in
the ability to identify and document every aspect – making lists
of lists, so that everyone has the same view of what it is they
need to be doing, both as individuals and in terms of the group.
