Choosing a GPS Garmin style

Of all the manufacturers of systems capable of interacting with the network of navigation satellites the company known as GPS Garmin has to be the leader. Supplier to the marine industry, military and aviation enthusiasts, when they turned their attention to consumer GPS Garmin decided to take all their expertise and provide it in devices which are popular with all those interested in outdoor activities.

For users of portable GPS Garmin represents a kind of quality which, until recently, was only available in high end maritime or vehicular navigation systems, which they have now brought into the handheld market.

Besides making good use of GPS Garmin systems also offer compatibility with the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) which allows the unit to receive terrestrial signals so that it can pinpoint its position to within 3 meters. This provides a very big improvement in terms of accuracy, and makes the unit far more useful in most navigational areas.

Each of the systems that use map based GPS Garmin manufacturers also come with a bas map which is highly detailed, and most have the possibility to connect to a PC and cross load data. This also means that new maps can be purchased and downloaded onto the system, so long as the map is compatible with the Garmin MapSource standard.

Of course, to support all these systems, be they map-based or directional GPS, Garmin also produces a range of software for PCs which can interact with the units, extending their usefulness in the field.
