GPS reviews – helping you find the right global positioning system
for you
Whether you are looking for an in-car solution or want the latest
gadget for your backpack, you’ll want to read a few gps reviews to
make sure you find the right device. Some gps reviews appear to
be more hype than even good fiction – so use a discerning eye to
sort the hard facts from the publicity material.
As a guide, good gps reviews include the following information.
These may be in the form of a tick list to compare different
manufacturers, and include opinions on performance as well:
·
Intended use and any specific tailoring (avionics, marine, in-car
mapping, hand held locator, etc)
·
Feature list (including compass, barometer, altimeter, waypoints,
speed of travel, distance and time to destination, fish finder,
waterproof, etc)
·
Navigation ease of use including menuing system/number of clicks
·
Screen size, colour/monochrome display and map resolution
·
Power consumption (source and how long to fully discharge)
·
Compatibility with mapping systems for the areas you require
·
Peripheral connections (antenna, power, data, memory card and
phone connections)
·
Transmission (time to warm-up, satellite usage/frequency of map
updates and data downloading)
·
Map content (scale, roads, topographical key, etc)
·
Results of a practical performance test
When evaluating gps reviews, there’s nothing like first hand
experience in the field to provide a large dose of reality.
Ensure you get a clear idea of 1. how easy the gps is to use, 2.
how easy it is to obtain software (maps, other information), and
3. how easy it is to connect – (including any special cables to
connect your gps to a PDA or PC). Your investigation will pay
big dividends on water or in the field/road/air - provided you’ve
developed realistic expectations before you buy.
