Outdoor
apparel fabrics explained
Whenever you plan to expose yourself to the elements, be it
wind, rain, snow or sunshine, it is important to make sure that
you have selected the correct outdoor apparel for the climate.
One of the most important decisions that you will make is to
choose outdoor apparel which is made of a specific fabric. Each
fabric has it’s own advantages and disadvantages, and there are
two specific ones which require some additional explanation.
The basic fleece is a piece of outdoor apparel which is designed
to be a middle layer of clothing between the outer shell and any
undergarments which you choose to wear. Generally speaking,
fleece fabric is extremely warm, but also allows the passage of
air and so does not suffer from problems relating to
overheating. However, it is not suitable as an outer layer in
climates where wind chill is a problem due to the fact that the
slightest breeze will cut through it.
Another special piece of fabric which provides outdoor apparel
with a very high level of waterproofing is known as Gor-Tex.
Shoes as well as jackets can be made from this fabric, and it is
entirely waterproof and also breathable. However, unlike fleece
material it can provide the wearer with a satisfactory level of
wind protection which makes it ideal for both snow and rain
climates.
So, choosing the correct fabric for shoes, jackets and middle
layers is vital, as they perform different functions. When
putting together the outdoor apparel for your next trip,
remember to plan for the worst kind of climate that you can
envisage in the area that you are going, and you will not have
any surprises.
