Top tips for
buying outdoor products
Buying outdoor products for use on your next trip, or as a gift
for an avid enthusiast of hiking, hunting or fishing can be a
reasonably taxing experience, especially if you do not know all
the latest jargon. While most of the terms used in describing
outdoor products will be reasonably straight forward and easy to
pick up, there are some which might need a little explanation,
especially if you are not someone who regularly shops for this
kind of item.
In the ranges of outdoor products which are designed to protect
against the elements, there are a few specific fabric terms
which will be useful. For example, a fleece is usually a warm
jacket made of a material which provides great insulation, but
which does not provide protection against wind. As such it is
usually found as a mid layer garment, under something like a
Gore-Tex jacket. Gore-Tex is a fabric which is entirely water,
snow and wind proof.
When it comes to navigation, there are also plenty of outdoor
products to choose from, starting with regular mountaineering
accessories such as the good old map and compass. These enable
the orienteer to identify points on the map, based on bearing
and distance, in order to pinpoint the users location. Of
course, for those with a little extra cash to spend, GPS
provides a much easier way of doing this, by using a network of
satellites to automatically calculate the units location to
within a matter of meters. Handheld units make great gifts for
avid adventurers.
