Tent
heaters : a necessary evil
Heating a tent is always a slightly difficult prospect. Previous
attempts at home made tent heaters have, more often that not,
been ineffective or ended in total catastrophe. From candles in
jars, through to naked flames burning away merrily, the attempt
to keep warm in a tent has been fraught with safety issues. Now,
though, modern tent heaters exist which could prove to be an
effective, if slightly bulky way to keep a tent warm, even in
the most extreme weather conditions.
The technology that modern tent heaters use is an attempt to get
around all the safety issues that have existed in the past. We
can all see that a naked flame in a tent, usually constructed
from highly flammable material, is a dangerous thing to have,
since it can cause the entire tent to burst into flames.
There are, however, other issues which tent heaters need to
address, such as not producing toxic gases such as carbon
monoxide, which is a problem when heating any enclosed space
with a device which burns. The obvious solution, then, would
appear to be to simply remove the burning element from the
equation.
And so, tent heaters today use a new technology which, rather
than burning the gas with a flame, uses some clever chemistry to
persuade it to burn without a flame, and with no nasty gaseous
by products such as carbon monoxide. The only thing that these
heaters cannot protect against is being left on whilst the
inhabitants of the tent are sleeping, so always remember to
switch it off!
