Why choose an
alcohol stove
The first thing to note is that the alcohol stove is not for
everyone involved in outdoors expeditions, and is a reasonably
specialized piece of equipment. So, first some basic facts about
choosing and using an alcohol stove of which you might not be
aware.
One of the key principles of the alcohol stove is that it
provides a way to cook whilst out camping which is substantially
lighter than a regular stove such as one that burns canned
liquid gas. This is why they are sometimes referred to as
ultralight stoves.
Due to the way that the alcohol stove works, some design
differences exist between them and a propane stove, such as the
fact that the flame is housed in a deep well, and can get
extremely hot when used properly. Without the housing, the flame
would probably blow out in even a light wind because alcohol
flames are not very stable.
There are several sites which purport to show you how to build
an alcohol stove at home, rather than buying one of the
commercially available models. This is not something that is
recommended, since there is an inherent danger in creating
something which is designed to get very hot with materials from
around the house.
One of the big bonus points to consider when choosing an alcohol
stove is that there are no moving parts or bits of plastic,
which makes them more reliable than other, valve based cooking
apparatus. As an added point for environmentally minded – the
fuel is renewable, as opposed to fossil, and therefore makes a
great cooking alternative.
