The various
kinds of backpacking stoves
If you are planning to be cooking in the great outdoors, and
especially if you are doing so whilst backpacking, there are
several features that will be useful to you in backpacking
stoves. Before you try to narrow down the various choices, you
need to try and imagine the conditions under which you will be
using the stove, so that you can isolate only those backpacking
stoves which fit all your requirements.
For example, if you are going to be away from the base camp for
some time, then choosing from backpacking stoves that do not
burn lots of fuel, or that have fuel which is lighter than other
kinds is going to be a good idea. This is a trade off between
how long the stove takes to boil a pan of water, and how many
times you are going to be using it.
Backpacking stoves will also need to be backed up by spare fuel,
and an alternative way of cooking, such as a solid fuel cooking
device using the fire lighter style substance called hexamine,
or something similar. It would not be pleasant to find yourself
out on the trail, but unable to heat a pan of water because the
stove has failed you.
Part of this is solved by choosing from a range of backpacking
stoves which does not have any moving parts. Many alcohol fueled
stoves, for example, whilst being relatively dangerous to use,
also have no parts that can become clogged, or break, which
gives them an additional advantage over others such as propane
stoves, which need a valve.
