Dual purpose backpacking supplies

It is always important to try and keep weight to a minimum when going on your backpacking travels, and one of the best ways to do this is to make a list of backpacking supplies which are dual purpose. In fact, one of the principle weight saving principles that is applied by proponents of the latest craze – ultralight backpacking – is just that. Any backpacking supplies that they take along with them should be dual purpose, or they waste valuable weight.

Of course, some backpacking supplies cannot be dual purpose, and are also vital. These include such items as stoves and lighting equipment. A stove cannot heat, for example, except as a consequence of being used, and you cannot generally cook on a lantern. But there are some bits of kit which lend themselves to being dual purpose.

There are also some ingenious backpacking supplies that have been invented with the dual purpose, or at least weight reduction, mantra in mind. For example, there are water cups which also filter, reducing the need to carry around a filtering system as well as something to drink the liquid from.

Of course, there is the good old Swiss army knife, which has to be one of the most useful of all backpacking supplies. Not only do they tend to be at least dual purpose, they have now been combined with such features as a compass in the carrying case, a magnifying glass which can also be used to light fires, if there is sun, and a butane lighter in the end, if not.
