Downsizing
your camping equiptment
There is a novel approach to backpacking which is making the
rounds, known as ultralight backpacking. The mantra appears to
be, wherever you go, go lighter, and makes sense. It is also
possible to buy camping equiptment in ultralight flavors –
pieces of kit which are designed from the ground up to be more
comfortable to carry by virtue of weighing very little. Finding
ultralight camping equiptment used to be difficult, but has
become very much easier of late, and here are a few examples of
what kind of camping kit can be made smaller.
Firstly, a down filled sleeping bag can be classified as
ultralight, it will go smaller and lighter than a regular one,
but of course it will not dry out as well should it get wet.
There are also ultralight synthetic bags available from good
camping equiptment stores and web sites, some so small they will
fit into a soda bottle.
Next in the ultralight camping equiptment list is a tent. These
days, there is no need to be carrying around a tent that weighs
as much as they usually do. Poles made of fiberglass, for
example, are much lighter than their aluminum counterparts,
although they can be a little less stable.
You will also need something to cook on, and most camping
equiptment stores will now offer ultalight stoves next to the
regular ones. The benefit being that they are smaller too and
run on fuels which burn more efficiently, and the extra expense
is more than made up for by the fact that the pack that you need
to carry it in can also be smaller.
