Cooking
utensils and camping food
Most innovations in the area of camping food are in the way that
it is cooked, not really the food itself. Of course, many would
take issue with that statement, and cite examples such as soup,
freeze dried coffee and other dehydrated foodstuffs as being the
kind of innovative solution that has come with the advent of
modern camping. You will still need to heat up camping food,
however, and so the innovations in the area of cooking are
important.
This is especially the case when it comes to ultralight
backpacking, or backpacking in climates where it makes sense to
try and carry as little as possible – in some cases making up
the weight in the camping food itself. New fuels have helped in
this, or rather, new uses for old fuels.
Take the Trangia alcohol fueled ultralight stove. Alcohol as a
cooking fuel is not really new – everyone knows that it burns
well, and could be used to heat up camping food. Some people
have already made their own little stoves with soda cans and a
bit of luck, but Trangia have taken it one step further an
created something that is safe, easy and lightweight.
One thing that any camping food that you take with you needs to
be is neutral – so nothing that is high in spice content. There
is nothing more unpleasant than upsetting your stomach in the
middle of nowhere, even camp sites are not the best place to
have any kind of gastric illness.
