The Coleman inverter explained

The first question that comes to mind is the obvious one – what is the Coleman inverter anyway. An inverter is a novel product which can take a 12 volt DC supply and turn it into an AC supply which you can plug your equipment into. 12 volt supplies that can be used with the Coleman inverter are car batteries and in-vehicle cigarette lighters, which makes them perfect for those who have established a base camp and want to run regular appliances off their vehicles power supply.

Something to look out for when buying your Coleman inverter is to choose one which is the right power for the devices that you need to connect to it. For example, a 19 inch television consumes 110 watts, whilst a camcorder will draw only 20 watts. At the other end of the scale, a power drill will need 200 watts, and other small appliances will draw over 300 watts.

The power is also cumulative – so if you want to run a television, and a camcorder at the same time, you will need a Coleman inverter that runs to about 150 watts. They are available in all kinds of ratings from 150 watts right up to 500 watts. Over 500 watts and you will begin to have problems with the battery power that is supplied.

Also, when buying a Coleman inverter look for the safety features that are going to be relevant for the environment you are going to be using it in. At a minimum they should include input and output surge protection and a low battery alarm.
