The best
hiking tips are obvious!
As always with tips of any kind, you are probably going to read
through this little list of hiking tips and say to yourself that
they are all obvious. Very true, most will be, but when you are
preparing to do any kind of group pastime, especially one where
the terrain is potentially hazardous, you like to state the
obvious so that everyone knows the same obvious. Plus, hiking
tips that are obvious often get overlooked, since it is assumed
that somebody has thought of them.
The first in our list of obvious hiking tips is to plan ahead.
Know where you want to go, how long it should take, and what
kind of waypoints you will be looking for as you go. This last
is particularly important, and often forgotten, since it is
assumed that you can just stop and take a compass reading or two
and figure out where you are. In the fog, that won’t be
possible, although you might recognize the terrain, if you’re
lucky. Try to have a back up plan, such as a portable GPS (now
reasonably priced) or a cell phone.
On the other hand, the cell phone might not work, or the area
might be GPS opaque. So, the next in our set of hiking tips has
to be – know what to expect when you get there. Know your target
environment. If it is going to be the rainy season in a rainy
area, then it will probably rain. Obvious things like that are
so often overlooked, and also dangerous not to think of.
