What to look
for in outdoor lanterns
When choosing from the different types of outdoor lanterns it is
important to be aware of the circumstances and location under
which it will be used, as well as any other features or
requirements which could influence your choice. These days,
there are many different outdoor lanterns to choose from, since
they are sold for the back yard, camping trip, as well as those
designed to be carried along, lit, and those that are destined
to be used as static lighting.
Outdoor lanterns come fueled by various different types – there
are liquid, non pressurized fuels such as kerosene, pressurized
fuels such as propane, and alternative fuels such as electricity
and candles. All have their own particular merits and
inconveniences. For example, anything with a flame is going to
be harder to light and less reliable than electricity.
If weight is an issue, then you need to be sure, when choosing
outdoor lanterns that the fuel type leads to a portable
solution. Gas canisters can be quite heavy, kerosene takes up a
lot of space, but on the other hand electricity powered lamps
require that you either have guaranteed electricity, or a spare
set of batteries. These factors all make candle lamps an ideal
choice for backpacking.
Recent innovations have also meant that the argument about lamps
being difficult to light no longer apply. These days, outdoor
lanterns can be fitted with special lighting devices which
require you to just touch a button. Of course, as with any
device that is destined to be used away from home, you need to
trade the features against any reduction in reliability – if it
can go wrong, it probably will.
