Choosing a
suitable canvas tarp
The first question to ask, is why a canvas tarp is needed at
all. In fact, they are very useful for covering up your
equipment while it is in transit. Usually a canvas tarp can be
found covering a trailer full of gear, protecting it from rain,
which could cause damage to any equipment that you might need on
your camping trip.
The canvas tarp usually ties down to the trailer, and so it is
important to get one which has good quality D-rings. These
D-rings are like little eyes in the fabric, with a metal ring
through which you can pass a rope to tie the tarp to the
trailer, being sure to overlap with the side of the trailer so
that there is no gap. Overfilling will cause gaps to open up
between the trailer side and the tarp, causing water to seep in.
Naturally, almost every canvas tarp will be waterproof, since
this is the principle reason for using one. Some, however, will
just be sprayed with waterproofing, while others will actually
be made from a waterproof, breathable fabric. While this might
be a more expensive option it is worth the extra expense to have
a tarp which does not cause condensation to appear on the
inside.
That is really all there is to buying a canvas tarp, to be sure
that it has good quality D-rings, well stitched in, and decent
waterproofing. If a good value tarp can be found that fulfils
these criteria then it can be purchased, although there is
something to be said for buying a premium brand since they will
be longer lasting.
