Discovering
canvas tents
If this is the first time that you find yourself buying or
having to deal with canvas tents, then it is worthwhile to take
a little bit of time to look at the technology behind what is a
reasonably simple concept. Canvas tents have been around so long
that people take them for granted. However, if one stops to look
at the various kinds that are on the market then it becomes
obvious that there is some information which will be useful.
For example, there are two kinds of canvas tents – free standing
and tents with poles. A free standing tent needs no support
other than the person lying inside it, and possibly pegged down
at the corners if being used on a slope or in extreme
conditions.
This differs from the traditional idea that people have of
canvas tents, in which a series of poles hold up the roof. Of
course, these days there are single pole tents as well as
multiple pole tents, which provide additional stability but at
the expense of added weight.
The groundsheet is also important. In days gone by, canvas tents
used to have three separate pieces. There was the tent itself,
possibly split into an outer shell, or flysheet, and an inner
shell. These were placed over a groundsheet, which was typically
made of rubber to protect against moisture.
These days, the groundsheet is built in to canvas tents, which
is more convenient. Of course one needs to be sure that the seal
between the tent and the sheet is above ground level, and
remains sealed over time.
