Never get lost
with compass watches
The convenience of owning one of the many compass watches that
can be found on the market cannot be overestimated if you are a
regular walker. A GPS system is fine, but still a little
sophisticated for many people. Others find that compass watches
offer just the right mixture of convenience and technology –
they can still be used as a regular compass, but are always
there on your wrist.
There is, however, a catch. Compass watches are not suitable for
orienteering, or navigating with a map since you are not able to
place them on top of the map in order to perform triangulation
or find bearings. On the other hand, once you know the bearing
upon which you need to travel, the compass on the watch is ideal
for having a quick reference when you are on the move.
Compass watches come in two flavors – digital and analogue. The
more advanced digital versions include all kinds of innovative
technology such as the general heading as well as the accurate
bearing in numbers, and most have a rotating bezel with the
compass points around the outside.
Analogue compass watches generally have either the compass
underneath the face, which flips up to reveal the compass
underneath, or on the strap. A unique variation on the theme is
the solar compass watch, which was originally introduced by the
manufacturers of the Swiss Army brand.
Compass watches are the ideal alternative to expensive GPS and
portable GPS units, and offer just enough functionality for
those who like the feel of a map in their hands, and enjoy
orienteering with as little technology as possible.
