Stave off
hunger with freeze dried food
Firstly, whet exactly is freeze dried food, and does it taste as
horrific as the name implies? The answer is that freeze dried
food is food that has had the water extracted from it after
freezing, and then vacuum packed so that it does not decompose,
and lasts a long time. The added advantage is that it is smaller
and lighter to carry around, but that you do need to add (hot)
water to it before eating.
Now, this might sound reasonably horrible, but freeze dried food
is actually quite acceptable. Instant coffee, for example, is
freeze dried, and is accepted as a good substitute for the real
thing. In fact, many things can be stored in this way, and they
nearly always hold their taste.
Apples and other fruits are examples of freeze dried foods which
can be reconstituted just by adding water, to make an apple
sauce that is high in energy, tastes great and makes a good
snack that is very quick to prepare. In fact, any fruit is going
to be a good source of sugars that are vital if you are walking
around in the great outdoors.
As an aside, NASA has developed a number of interesting freeze
dried food items over the years. The requirements for carrying
food into space is about the same as it is for hiking – it needs
to be light, quickly prepared with the minimum of fuss and
cooking. There is another restriction – in space you don’t want
to be messing around with hot water.
Hence, freeze dried food such as ice cream, NASA style, does not
even need water – you just put it in your mouth. Of course, it
is not quite as good as the real thing, but they seem to like
it!
