Marine
navigation with the Garmin GPS 72
The principle target consumer group for the Garmin GPS 72 has to
be those involved in marine or extreme wetland navigation.
Anyone who needs to be able to navigate the waterways, lakes or
out on the open sea will benefit from owning a Garmin GPS 72
navigation system.
The unit is extremely rugged and waterproof, as one would expect
from a marine navigation unit. Where the Garmin GPS 72 really
excels in its feature list is that besides being almost
unbreakable, it is also unsinkable. So, of you drop it in
whatever water you are navigating, it will float, enabling you
to pick it up, and continue on your way.
While it is billed as an entry level device, the Garmin GPS 72
still has some of the features that you associate with higher
end devices. For example, it benefits from Wide Area
Augmentation System compatibility, ensuring that the reading is
accurate to within 3 meters, where available.
Coupled with the internal marine point database and 1 MB of
internal memory, this will enable any land or sea navigator to
get the most out of their Garmin GPS 72 unit. There are also
built in celestial tables, and sun and moon calculations, and,
as you might expect, the position data can be displayed in a
variety of formats.
The easy to use keypad is backlight, as is the screen, which
makes the Garmin GP 72 easy to use in any conditions, including
fog and in the pitch black. Various alarms for anchor drag, off
course, and a clock round off this surprisingly complete
package.
