Hunting in GPS sales

The best way to get a good deal in the area of portable navigation systems is when equipment suppliers hold GPS sales. This happens when the units in stock are to be superseded by newer, more modern items. In fact, prices are already so reasonable for navigation systems that you might not even have to wait for a supplier to hold one of their GPS sales.

One of the reasons that prices have come down so much is because manufacturing and selling the units has become profitable. The technology available is now mature, and GPS sales high enough that it has become a consumer item, as opposed to a semi professional specialist item.

The features that have driven GPS sales up are mainly the ease of use as an alternative to a compass, and not really the fact that the units can hold a full map, and pinpoint your position on them. These are still relatively expensive, seeing as the maps must often be purchased in addition to the basic unit.

With GPS sales on the rise, generally, however, we can expect that prices will generally fall further, and the technology improve to the point that map data will become cheaper too. In the first units, which were restricted to vehicular GPS systems, the map data was included on a CD, which was the only way to get the data into the GPS.

These days, portable GPS navigation systems are generally connectable to a PC, via USB or serial connectors. This means that they can be more versatile, and data shared more easily, making them more useful, and driving GPS sales up further, which in turn helps to bring prices down.
